In 2020, NIRH worked with Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT), Pro-Choice Ohio, and Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, in partnership with other coalition members to introduce a non-discrimination ordinance to protect people who live and work in Columbus against retaliation for any reproductive healthcare decision, including but not limited to accessing abortion care, using birth control, having a baby, or lactation needs. This initiative built on Columbus’s progress toward realizing many of the policy objectives enshrined in the Local Reproductive Freedom Index’s Model City, including affording protections for people based on gender identity, protecting abortion clinics, and embracing comprehensive sexuality education curricula in schools and city health centers.
