NIRH Condemns Florida Court Decision Upholding Abortion Ban

The National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) condemns today’s Florida Supreme Court decision to uphold a 15-week abortion ban, which has now triggered a previously passed six-week ban on abortion that will take effect 30 days from now. Please find NIRH’s statement below.   

Abortion access in Florida, and in the greater southeast region, hinged on the tangled outcome of this case. This will have a reverberating impact on the already dire post-Roe abortion landscape across the entire country and drives urgency around proactive policies that help address the far-reaching consequences of abortion bans. More people than ever before will need access to additional resources to navigate the narrowing landscape across the Southeast and this will require cities and counties to do what many of their statewide leaders refuse to do — resource abortion care and the support needed for people to access that care, commit to providing medically accurate resources, and create safe environments for people and their loved ones to access that information.

“Abortion bans — at any point in pregnancy — are designed to cruelly deny care and disproportionately harm historically marginalized communities. This Florida ruling is state-sanctioned political interference in the private decisions that should be left to each individual, guided by medicine, not politics.  NIRH remains committed to forging policies that address meaningful access to abortion — as early as possible and as late as necessary. Because each of us should have the freedom to control our own bodies, health, and lives.”
