Statement from Andrea Miller, President of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund and Campaign for a Pro-Choice New York
“Donald Trump’s victory is devastating to the nation and the world, but especially to the millions of women and commonsense, pro-choice voters across the country who expect our politicians to trust and respect women.
“Trump’s belief that women who have abortions should face punishment and his promise to appoint anti-choice Supreme Court justices, coupled with Mike Pence’s extreme track record of legislative attacks against women’s health and rights, imperil the health and lives of women in every state.
“Despite Hillary Clinton’s decisive win in New York demonstrating New Yorkers’ overwhelming support of women’s health, rights, and equality, the New York State Senate will unfortunately retain an anti-choice majority. The vast majority of statehouses across the country will likewise remain in anti-choice hands. We expect that along with their anti-choice allies in Congress, they will double down on their effort to pass scores of new laws designed to shame, pressure, and punish women who decide to have abortions.
“We are determined to stand up to them – and to stand strong for health, rights, equality, and justice at every turn. We will work side by side with advocates in New York and in dozens of states and localities, to not only fight back, but to advance our agenda – one that treats women with the compassion, respect, and dignity they deserve. This is a challenging and troubling time for our nation, and our work to protect access to safe, legal, affordable abortion care has perhaps never been as important as it is now.”
