Statement from Andrea Miller, President, National Institute for Reproductive Health

“In his eighth annual State of the State address today, Gov. Cuomo gave his full commitment to improving the lives of women by expanding reproductive freedom, along with a host of proposals to advance economic justice and safety for New York women.

“We have an obligation to the people of New York and across the country to ensure that New York offers the fullest protections for reproductive health care, as many other states have done over the course of the previous year. NIRH looks forward to working with the Governor and the legislature to make sure we codify in state law the protections of Roe v. Wade and lift the harmful and outdated criminal ban on self-abortion. In order to protect and enhance access to contraception across the state, we will also work to pass the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act (CCCA).

“These policies – along with securing economic justice for tipped workers, combatting sexual harassment in the workplace, and ending violence against women both at home and through pornography – are crucial in order for New York’s laws and policies to reflect what millions of people across the state want and need.”
