NEW YORK — In a bold show of support for reproductive freedom, Durham County, North Carolina became the latest locality to pass a resolution calling for state and federal funding of abortion coverage. The advocates and activists that made this win possible are a part of a strong and growing movement underway in cities and localities across the country to eliminate the unequal, harmful, and discriminatory policies that  disproportionately impact low-income communities, people of color, immigrants, and young folks. Given North Carolina’s practice of controlling its cities’ freedom to determine their own policies about coverage, this resolution is an important step in standing up for local policy that works for the people who live in Durham County.

NIRH was proud to fund NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina’s efforts in passing this resolution, and, along with All* Above All, has partnered since 2013 with local advocates across the country to pass 14 resolutions that boldly state support for abortion coverage, and call on federal and state elected officials to repeal the Hyde Amendment, and lift the bans that deny many women the power to decide their own futures. More about the local efforts to oppose the Hyde Amendment can be found here.
