New York – In response to continued federal attacks on reproductive health, rights, and justice, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a full-scale public awareness campaign to ensure women in New York have access to the comprehensive reproductive health care services they need. The campaign is a direct response to the proliferation of Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPC) – also known as fake clinics – that misrepresent themselves as legitimate medical centers. The National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) applauds Governor Cuomo’s aggressive action to combat fake clinics and their deceptive practices meant to mislead and misinform women about their health.
The following is a statement from Andrea Miller, President of NIRH, in support of Governor Cuomo’s actions and applauding the public awareness campaign.
“When it comes to preserving access to abortion in New York State, fake clinics are enemy number one. The misinformation and lies spread by these deceitful organizations threaten access to fact-based, medically accurate healthcare, disproportionately targeting women of color, low-income women, and vulnerable communities. This is unacceptable.
“New Yorkers, regardless of immigration, insurance, or socioeconomic status, deserve confidential, comprehensive health care, and the Know Your Options campaign cuts through misinformation spread by fake clinics to meet women where they are with trusted information and resources.
“With a hostile federal administration doing all it can to push abortion out of reach, it’s critical that our cities and states step up to ensure that women have access to quality health care and accurate information about abortion options. With this campaign, Governor Cuomo is sending a message that if the Supreme Court of the United States won’t stand up for women’s right to access abortion, New York will. NIRH applauds the Governor and Lieutenant Governor for their continued efforts to protect reproductive freedom in New York.”
