Her career in abortion care has spanned all facets of clinical provision, providing care in universities, independent clinics, and Planned Parenthood settings. She spent her early career at Washington University School of Medicine, where she not only practiced clinical abortion care but also served as a mentor and leader in the training of the next generation of abortion providers. During that time, understanding the profound impact of access deserts across the Midwest and South, Dr. McNicholas pioneered a practice model that married academia and traveling abortion provision. In addition to serving Missourians, she routinely traveled to Kansas and Oklahoma helping to keep a local lifeline for these communities.
In 2019, Dr. McNicholas joined Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri as the organization’s first-ever Chief Medical Officer. In this role, she oversaw the planning and execution of the organization’s post-Roe strategy. Under her leadership the organization took a radical approach to access expansion, expanding the care that PPSLR provides to include abortion through 28 weeks, innovating the provision of medication abortion to use telemedicine, with the option of medication by mail, and expanding the anesthesia services to ensure patients had a dignified and comfortable experience. Under her leadership, PPSLR launched the regional logistics center, which has been critical in navigating abortion seekers to southern Illinois.
Dr. McNicholas believes a physician’s advocacy voice is as important as their clinical, research, or surgical skills. She has grown into an unapologetic and vocal advocate engaging in every available medium. She has been the plaintiff to numerous challenges of state and federal laws and regulations. She has testified before the Missouri Legislature and the United States Congress.
