About National Institute for Reproductive Health

The National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) and the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund (NIRH Action Fund) are advocacy groups that fight for just and equitable access to reproductive health care and build political power for reproductive freedom. We launch campaigns, change policy, and elect candidates, all by working hand-in-hand with reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations in states and cities across the country. We work in the communities where the need is great and we can make a difference, so the fabric of reproductive freedom is harder to tear apart. 


The National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) and the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund (NIRH Action Fund), advocacy groups that fight for just and equitable access to reproductive health care, are seeking a full-time Vice President of Communications to shape the narrative, drive impactful media strategies, and amplify the voices of those leading the fight for reproductive freedom. 

This is a benefits eligible, full-time non-exempt position that will require 35 hours of work, with flexibility, during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM. The salary range for this position is $140,000 to $160,000, commensurate with experience.  

THE ROLE 

The Vice President of Communications will play a pivotal role at a critical moment for reproductive rights in America. As attacks on access to abortion and contraception escalate, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the narrative, drive impactful media strategies, and amplify the voices of those leading the fight for reproductive freedom. 

Reporting directly to the organizations’ President, the VP of Communications will lead a strategic and integrated communications program that positions the National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) and the NIRH Action Fund as national leaders in advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. This role is at the heart of NIRH’s mission to transform state and local advocacy into a powerful force for change, while shaping national narratives that elevate the importance of proactive policy and equity-driven solutions. 

As a member of the Leadership Team, the VP will collaborate with internal and external partners to craft and execute bold strategies that engage policymakers, donors, and movement leaders. Leading a talented team of professionals and working alongside grassroots advocates, this leader will help NIRH seize the moment to inspire action, challenge systemic barriers, and secure a future where reproductive freedom is a reality for all. 

As VP of Communications, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the narrative of one of the leading organizations in the reproductive rights movement. You’ll work with a passionate, mission-driven team to advance transformational change, build power, and elevate the voices of communities most impacted by systemic barriers. 

The Vice President of Communications will manage a team of dedicated and talented professionals, as well as consultants and vendors. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

Organizational and Strategic Leadership 

  • Develop and execute a bold, cohesive communications strategy that drives awareness, engages stakeholders, and advances NIRH’s mission at the intersection of reproductive health, rights, and racial equity. 
  • Serve as an active member of the Leadership Team through monthly meetings, strategic collaboration, and planning to ensure alignment of communications strategies with the work of the program’s departments.  
  • Shape the organization’s narrative and messaging, ensuring consistency and resonance with key audiences, including policymakers, donors, and the reproductive justice movement. 
  • Collaborate across teams to elevate the voices of NIRH’s partners, developing tools and resources to support their communications and messaging strategies. 
  • Oversee and manage public opinion polling & message research for NIRH and the AF, advocate for innovative approaches to engage audiences, and integrate these data-driven insights into developing communications and messaging strategies. 
  • Provide support to the President in the development of content, updates, and information for distribution to internal and external audiences, this may include presentations to the NIRH and AF Board of Directors. 

Team Leadership & Management 

  • Lead, manage, and develop a communications team of professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity, and accountability to drive alignment with strategic objectives to enhance the NIRH brand. 
  • Provide mentorship, professional development, and growth opportunities for team members while managing performance and setting clear goals. 
  • Cultivate a values-driven, inclusive workplace culture that reflects NIRH’s commitment to equity and justice. 

Communications & Brand Management 

  • Oversee all aspects of media relations, digital content, social media, and community engagement, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. 
  • Lead the ongoing development of NIRH’s digital presence, including overseeing the design, strategy, and management of the organization’s websites. 
  • Serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson as needed, representing NIRH’s voice in media engagements and public appearances. 
  • Develop crisis communications plans and responses, ensuring the organization’s values and vision remain at the forefront. 

Collaboration & Organizational Impact 

  • Partner with the President to craft speeches, public statements, and other high-profile materials that reflect organizational priorities. 
  • Work closely with the Development team to create compelling donor communications that deepen engagement and support. 
  • Establish metrics to evaluate the impact of communications initiatives, using insights to continually refine and optimize strategies. 

WHAT YOU’LL BRING: 

  • A minimum of ten years of related, progressively responsible work experience in media relations, communications, digital, brand marketing and/or non-profit management, including supervisory and management experience. 
  • Knowledge of diverse groups, working with a multicultural workforce, and sensitivity and appreciation of cultural differences. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. 
  • Experience managing and moving the work in large, complex organizations; strong practice of clear priority-setting and communication of priorities and expectations. 
  • Deep knowledge of modern communications strategies; with an up-to-date understanding of what makes a modern communications operation successful. 
  • Creativity and the ability to develop strategies and solve problems amidst ambiguity and external challenges. 
  • Professional maturity, serving as a trustworthy leader and manager in the face of crisis or high stress situations. 
  • Detail-orientation and excellent project management skills, with ability to handle multiple projects and tasks, often in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of delivering strong written materials and presentations. 
  • Ability to see, understand and communicate the big picture as well as translate into actionable next steps 
  • Commitment to and passion for NIRH/NIRH-AF’s mission of advancing proactive policy at the state and local level – and securing new policies to expand access to abortion and contraception and promote health equity.
