Statement: NIRH Stands With Immigrants and Refugees

The National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH)’s mission is to help build a society in which everyone has the freedom and ability to control their reproductive and sexual lives. Therefore, NIRH stands in solidarity with immigrants, refugees, and all those seeking a safe home in the United States. NIRH condemns the latest atrocious policies and actions implemented by the Trump-Pence Administration to criminally prosecute and detain families seeking asylum at the U.S. border, whether together or separately.

Under Trump, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have demonstrated a callous disregard for human rights by carrying out this cruel policy. This moment calls for a groundswell of resistance – we cannot sit idly by while our federal government traumatizes thousands of children and families in pursuit of partisan political wins.

Since day one, the Trump-Pence Administration has attacked immigrants and refugees through its racist and xenophobic policies and rhetoric – banning Muslim refugees from entering the U.S.; using toxic, dehumanizing language to describe undocumented immigrants; and blocking access to abortion for young immigrants in detention.

Immigrant justice is intrinsically linked to reproductive health, rights, and justice. All people, regardless of immigration status, have the right to determine whether or when to have children; to have healthy pregnancies; to become parents; to parent with dignity, respect, and support; and to keep their families intact.

NIRH will continue to stand with partner organizations in cities and states across the country who advance this vision despite unprecedented attacks at the federal levels. Visit this website to learn some concrete steps you can take to help in this current humanitarian crisis.
