The University of Utah worked in 2017 to advocate for the debundling of reimbursements for immediate postpartum insertion of LARCs, as well as the cost of the device, within Utah Medicaid and other public and private insurance programs in the state. To ensure implementation of this policy, the university worked closely with hospitals in geographically diverse regions of the state to train providers and staff in offering this service. In addition, they conducted a needs assessment of the 44 birthing hospitals across the state to determine other barriers to LARC provision, particularly in smaller, rural hospitals, with an eye toward developing any necessary interventions to address these challenges.
