The Dangers of Wearing a Skirt

By Sophia

Recently, women in the South Park Slope and nearby parts of Brooklyn have been sexually assaulted. These crimes, which have been committed since March, remain unsolved. Police patrols have increased in that area, but the police seem to be continuing our patriarchal society’s dangerous misconceptions: the shorter the skirt, the tighter the shirt, the more skin being revealed somehow is the equivalent of a higher risk of being sexually assaulted.

Here is one account from a female resident of the neighborhood:

“[The officer] pointed at my outfit and said, ‘Don’t you think your shorts are a little short?'” she recalled. “He pointed at their dresses and said they were showing a lot of skin.”

He said that such clothing could make the suspect think he had “easy access,” said Lauren.

She said the officer explained that “you’re exactly the kind of girl this guy is targeting.”

….What?! No, Officer, it is your job to protect the women of the neighborhood, not place the responsibility for those attacks on them.

Besides, these attacks were committed during the SUMMER, so telling women not to wear shorts and skirts is ridiculous. It is the job of the attackers not to attack, and the NYPD to protect – other than that, no one else is responsible for what occurs.

Luckily, the SlutWalk rally happened on Saturday…
