TORCH Program Intern
REPORTS TO: Youth Initiatives Coordinator
POSITION AVAILABLE: Early January through June 30th, 2016*
*Opportunity to continue through the summer.
HOURS: About 10-15 hours per week
COMPENSATION: TORCH interns will receive travel reimbursement in the form of an unlimited monthly metro card. An additional stipend may be available at the completion of the internship, contingent upon internal budget approval.
SUMMARY: TORCH is a nationally recognized program that combines peer sexual and reproductive health education and leadership training for New York City youth. TORCH peer leaders build their self-esteem, develop leadership skills, and learn to make responsible choices. Then they share their knowledge with other teens by facilitating workshops around New York City.
The continuing education meetings are held every Tuesday between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. These meetings are designed to increase educational opportunities for a diverse group of young people, continue training on gaps in knowledge and skills, and to expose the group to various topics they request related to sexual reproductive health issues.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns provide hands-on program assistance to TORCH staff throughout the school year. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist TORCH staff in designing and planning weekly session agendas for Tuesday meetings, including brainstorming topics and/or activities to include in the agendas.
  • Assist with the outreach and recruitment of new peer leaders in the spring.
  • Assist with administrative duties including data entry.
  • Assist TORCH program staff with other tasks, as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An understanding and enjoyment of working directly with a diverse group of young people.
  • Strong personal commitment to youth development and sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice issues.
  • Some knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and adolescent sexuality.
  • Flexibility and creativity to work well with a small team of staff and interns.
  • Research and computer skills, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and data entry.
  • Time and organizational skills.
