Statement from National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) President Andrea Miller

Today, after the Trump-Pence administration took its latest step to restrict and withhold resources from providers and clinics that offer abortions or refer patients for abortion care, Governor Cuomo sent a letter to New York State Department of Health Commissioner Howard Zucker directing him to take immediate steps to protect and support New York’s reproductive health facilities.

The following is a statement from NIRH President Andrea Miller:

“As appalled as we are by the Trump-Pence administration’s latest reprehensible attack on women’s reproductive freedom, we are encouraged by Gov. Cuomo’s swift action in ensuring that New York State does all it can to mitigate the potentially devastating impact of a restriction such as this one. In working to ensure that family planning providers are able to continue to serve New York communities – especially those that need it most – the Governor is also taking a stand against the federal government’s intrusion into the doctor-patient relationship. We join him in his call to New York’s Congressional delegation to do everything in their power to oppose this attack on us, and condemn the Trump-Pence administration’s blatant anti-women and anti-abortion agenda.  As NIRH works with partners in states and cities across the country to protect against the harms of this impending gag rule, we encourage more elected leaders to take actions like Gov. Cuomo’s.”
