Advocating for a Statewide Anti-Shackling Ban in California

In 2012, NIRH supported Legal Services for Prisoners with Children to convene two roundtables of formerly incarcerated people, advocates, prison officials, healthcare providers, and policymakers to discuss shackling and the reproductive care provided to incarcerated pregnant people in the San Francisco Bay Area and how to improve current procedures. This work ultimately enabled Legal Services and its coalition partners to successfully advocate for a statewide anti-shackling ban. Later, in 2016, NIRH supported the work of the ACLU of Southern California to ensure aggressive implementation of this law
