Prisoners’ Legal Services

Prisoners’ Legal Services is an organization that challenges the carceral system through litigation, advocacy, client counseling, partnership with impacted individuals and communities, and outreach to policymakers and the public in order to promote the human rights of incarcerated persons and end harmful confinement.

In 2015, NIRH partnered with Prisoners’ Legal Services and Prison Birth Project to monitor implementation of a state law that prohibits the shackling of pregnant incarcerated women through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and recovery and notified prisons and jails of violations. They also engaged in stakeholder education around the law by creating educational materials for defense attorneys and relevant professional organizations.
