COLOR

Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR) is a community-rooted organization that works to enable Latinx individuals and their families to lead safe, healthy and self-determined lives. COLOR works to ensure that Latinx individuals and their families are accessing opportunities and resources for the health of mind, body, and spirit.

NIRH has worked with COLOR for several years to change the culture and policy landscape around abortion access and reproductive freedom in Colorado.

In 2014, NIRH partnered with COLOR to create a #wheresoursexed campaign through their Latinas Increasing Political Strength (LIPS) program to evaluate sex ed implementation in Denver following passage of the Colorado Healthy Youth Act.

In 2017, NIRH supported COLOR as they engaged with thirteen Denver City Council Members and worked with a city-wide coalition of grassroots and grasstops advocates to build support for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment and for state and federal funding of abortion care.

In 2018 -2019, NIRH worked with COLOR and Cobalt (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado) to advance policies that would ensure that all Coloradans, including young people, low-income communities, people of color, public service employees, immigrants, and refugees are able to access the full range of reproductive health care services they need, including contraception and abortion. Both organizations built strong relationships with the Governor’s office as well as other key state-level stakeholders, opening doors to create multi-year strategies to pass bold, proactive, protective reproductive health and rights legislation. With NIRH’s support, organizations in Colorado were galvanized by COLOR and Cobalt to create the CARE Act (Colorado Access to Reproductive (Health) Equity Act) Coalition. Building new relationships with other organizations has helped to create awareness in communities around Colorado.

Currently, NIRH works with COLOR as part of a cohort of organizations in Colorado on a long-term initiative to develop and advance an abortion rights vision, engage a new and broad base of supporters, and reduce shame and stigma by publicly promoting the affirmative value of abortion.
