NIRH started working with the Cherry Hill Women’s Center and New Jersey Policy Perspective in 2018 on a campaign to pass the Reproductive Freedom Act, groundbreaking omnibus legislation to secure reproductive freedom in state law, remove barriers to abortion care, and create more equitable access to reproductive health care.

The passage of the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act in January of 2022 and the Dobbs decision in June of 2022 motivated a continuing need for New Jersey to be a bold leader by expanding access to the full range of reproductive health services, including abortion. In 2022 NIRH worked with Thrive NJ, and specifically Cherry Hill Women’s Center, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey, and National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County,  to continue to put pressure on legislators to address all of the abortion access issues left unaddressed by the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act through a new bill, along with building momentum in the legislature and galvanizing grassroots support for core initiatives that include comprehensive sex education and addressing the harms of Crisis Pregnancy Centers. NIRH also led trainings for coalition members to build capacity in legislative advocacy, both through community outreach and through direct meetings with legislators. Our work with the Thrive NJ Coalition continues in 2023, continuing to work with legislators to pass a proactive abortion rights bill, focusing on the implementation of proactive legislation that passed in 2022, and building the capacity of coalition members to be advocacy leaders and representatives for their communities.

Our work with New Jersey in 2023 will continue pushing for legislative, regulatory, and executive action around abortion access. We will also be exploring local- and state-level public information campaigns, especially to counteract the disinformation spread by anti-abortion pregnancy centers across the state.
